- [Mount Tarumae](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mount-tarumae): Hokkaido, Mountain. An active volcano south of Lake Shikotsu whose 1909 lava dome sits in the summit crater like a giant pudding. From the 7th-station car park it is about 50 minutes up to Higashiyama (1,022 m) on the crater rim, one of the easiest volcano walks in Hokkaido, though the crater floor itself is closed.
- [Okushiri Island](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/okushiri-island): Hokkaido, Island. An island 84 km around, 61 km off Esashi in the Sea of Japan, known for sea urchin, clear water and the ring-shaped Nabezuru-iwa rock. The 1993 Hokkaido Nansei-oki earthquake and tsunami took 198 lives here; a memorial and a tsunami museum stand in Aonae.
- [Lake Mashu](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/lake-mashu): Hokkaido, Attraction. A caldera lake 212 m deep, walled in by cliffs up to 350 m high, that you look down on from observatories on the rim; there is no way down to the water. Summer fog often hides it, and the road past the free No. 3 Observatory closes in winter.
- [Kamuiwakka Hot Falls](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kamuiwakka-hot-falls): Hokkaido, Onsen. A river in Shiretoko National Park that runs warm because hot spring water from Mount Io feeds it. You wade about 400 m upstream, over small waterfalls, to a pool at the fourth fall where the water reaches about 35 to 38C. Entry is booked and paid, July to September only, at the end of about 10 km of gravel road that is open roughly June to the start of October.
- [Lake Kussharo](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/lake-kussharo): Hokkaido, Attraction. Japan's largest caldera lake, about 80 square kilometres, in Akan-Mashu National Park. At Sunayu hot water seeps up through the sand so you can scoop out your own bath, whooper swans winter on the unfrozen shallows, and the Wakoto Peninsula has a 2.5 km loop past steaming vents.
- [Michi-no-Eki Nakasatsunai](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-nakasatsunai): Hokkaido, Michi no eki. A spread-out station on Route 236 in a farming village south of Obihiro, with a free bean museum, a pioneer farmhouse and a cluster of small cafes and takeout shops built around local edamame, chicken and eggs.
- [Michi-no-Eki Nanairo Nanae](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-nanairo-nanae): Hokkaido, Michi no eki. A 2018 roadside station on Route 5 just north of Hakodate, about ten minutes by car from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station. Nanae apples turn up in shakes, soft-serve and juice flights, and the produce corner sells the town's vegetables.
- [Michi-no-Eki Obira Nishin Banya](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-obira-nishin-banya): Hokkaido, Michi no eki. A stop on Route 232, the Oronro Line, roughly halfway between Sapporo and Wakkanai. Next door stands the former Hanada family banya, a herring-fishing lodge that is the northernmost Important Cultural Property in Japan.
- [Hakodate Orthodox Church](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hakodate-orthodox-church): Hokkaido, Historic site. A white-walled, green-roofed Russian Byzantine church on the site of the Russian consulate chapel built in 1860, the starting point of Orthodox Christianity in Japan. The current building dates from 1916 and is an Important Cultural Property.
