- [Togetsukyo Bridge](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/togetsukyo-bridge): Kyoto, Landmark. A bridge has crossed here since 836, when a monk of Horin-ji built the first one a little upstream. The name came four centuries later from the retired emperor Kameyama, who watched the moon travel across the sky above the deck on an autumn night and said it looked like a moon crossing a bridge. Togetsukyo. Names in Kyoto are rarely this literal. The current structure went up in 1934. The deck and piers are reinforced concrete, because the river floods hard and wooden bridges here kept washing away, but the railings and parapets are wood and shaped in the old style, so from a distance it reads as a timber bridge. Photograph it from the north bank looking south, with Arashiyama behind it. The river changes name under the bridge. Upstream, coming out of the gorge, it is the Hozu. Downstream it is the Katsura. Same water. Autumn is when the hillside behind turns and the entire district becomes very hard to move through. Cherry season is nearly as bad. The bridge is 155 metres long and crossing it on a November Sunday can take fifteen minutes. Come at dawn, or in the rain, when the mist sits in the gorge and half the coaches cancel. On summer evenings, roughly July to September, cormorant fishermen work the water upstream of the bridge from boats with fire baskets hanging over the bow. You can watch from the bank for nothing or book a place on a passenger boat. Rental rowing boats operate from the north bank in daylight.

- [Mount Fuji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mount-fuji): Shizuoka, Mountain. Japan's highest mountain at 3,776 meters, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and active stratovolcano sacred for centuries.

- [Tonomine Highlands](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/tonomine-highlands): Hyogo, Mountain. An 800-metre-high plateau in inland Hyogo covered by roughly 90 hectares of silver susuki pampas grass, with a flat 3.1 km loop trail (about 90 minutes). The grass turns golden in late autumn, and it is known as a filming location for 'Norwegian Wood' and 'The Tale of the Princess Kaguya.'
- [Railway Museum](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/railway-museum): Saitama, Museum. You get in through an automatic ticket gate, exactly like a station, which is the first joke and sets the tone. The Railway Museum opened in Omiya in 2007 on JR East's own historical collection and doubled in size with a new wing in 2018. The centrepiece is the Rolling Stock Station, a hall holding 36 real vehicles arranged around a turntable: a Meiji-era steam locomotive, prewar electric cars, a sleeper carriage, imperial saloon cars behind glass, and a 0-series Shinkansen nose that still looks like the future it was sold as. Several times a day they rotate the C57 on the turntable and blow the whistle, which is loud in an enclosed hall and worth being present for. Upstairs is the engineering: signalling, brakes, why a flanged wheel stays on a rail, and a very large model diorama with scheduled shows. There are driving simulators, including a D51 steam simulator that requires you to shovel, and an E5 Shinkansen one that runs by lottery. Outside, a small train circuit lets children actually drive for a few hundred yen. It is designed for children and it is thorough enough for adults who like machines. English signage exists but the deeper labels are Japanese only. Tickets are around 1,600 yen and are sold in advance online and at convenience stores, and from machines at the museum on the day unless it has reached capacity. Weekends and school holidays are busy and the simulator lotteries fill within the first hour. From Omiya, take the New Shuttle one stop to Tetsudo-Hakubutsukan.
- [Horyu-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/horyu-ji): Nara, Temple. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important temples in Japan, Horyu-ji contains the oldest surviving wooden structures in the world, dating from the 7th century. Founded by Prince Shotoku in 607 AD, the temple complex houses an extraordinary collection of Buddhist art and architecture spanning over 1,400 years.
