- [Michi-no-Eki Niseko View Plaza](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-niseko-view-plaza): Hokkaido, Michi no eki. Where Route 5 meets the Iwanai–Toya road in Niseko, local farmers sell their own vegetables beside a tourist office with Mount Yotei filling the view. A good first stop for the Niseko area and a regular high scorer in national roadside-station rankings.
- [Rebun Island](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/rebun-island): Hokkaido, Island. A long, low island west of Wakkanai, reached only by a ferry of about two hours. From late May to August its grassy west-coast trails are covered in alpine flowers, including an orchid that grows nowhere else. The trails close for winter in October, and from November the ferry drops to two sailings a day each way.
- [Shiretoko Five Lakes](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/shiretoko-five-lakes): Hokkaido, Park. Five small lakes in old forest about 14 km past Utoro, inside the Shiretoko World Natural Heritage area. There are two ways to see them. An 800 m elevated boardwalk, fenced against bears, runs to the first lake and is free all season. The ground trail past all five has rules: from 10 May to 31 July you can only walk it on a registered guide's tour, and the rest of the season you sit a ten-minute lecture and pay 450 yen. The lakes are open from about mid-April to early or mid-November, while the road is open.
- [Upopoy National Ainu Museum and Park](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/upopoy-national-ainu-museum-and-park): Hokkaido, Museum. The national centre for Ainu culture, opened in 2020 on the shore of Lake Poroto in Shiraoi: the National Ainu Museum, a reconstructed kotan of thatched chise houses, a craft workshop and a hall for traditional dance. Entry is 1,200 yen, and JR Shiraoi Station is a 10-minute walk away.
- [Michi-no-Eki Utoro Shirietoku](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-utoro-shirietoku): Hokkaido, Michi no eki. The roadside station in Utoro, on Route 334 next to the Shiretoko World Heritage Center. Eat salmon caught off this coast, pick up a deer burger to go, and check the road and boat news before heading for the Five Lakes or the cape.
- [Goryokaku Fort](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/goryokaku-fort): Hokkaido, Castle. Hakodate’s star-shaped fortress marks Japan’s encounter with Western military design at the end of the shogunate. Moats, earthen ramparts and a reconstructed magistrate’s office make its history tangible at ground level, while a separate observation tower reveals the plan.
- [Mount Usu and Showa-shinzan](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mount-usu-and-showa-shinzan): Hokkaido, Mountain. Mount Usu, the active volcano on the south shore of Lake Toya, and Showa-shinzan, the lava dome at its foot that pushed up out of a wheat field between 1943 and 1945. A ropeway (2,000 yen return) climbs Usu, and trails near Toyako Onsen walk through the craters and wrecked buildings of the 2000 eruption.
- [Noboribetsu Date Jidaimura](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/noboribetsu-date-jidaimura): Hokkaido, Theme park. A recreated Edo-period town on the road up to Noboribetsu Onsen. No rides; the point is the shows, above all the ninja action at Ninja Kasumi Yashiki and the oiran dance, plus costume rental and hands-on games.
- [Jozankei Onsen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/jozankei-onsen): Hokkaido, Onsen. Jozankei is inside Sapporo's city limits, in the mountains of Minami-ku, about an hour from Sapporo Station on a Jotetsu bus. Kappa statues stand all over town, the footbath in Jozan Gensen Park is free, and the red Futami suspension bridge is where to stand when the gorge turns red and yellow in early to mid October.
- [Kushiro Shitsugen National Park](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kushiro-shitsugen-national-park): Hokkaido, Park. About 22,000 hectares of reed and sedge marsh north of Kushiro, Japan's largest wetland and a national park since 1987. The easiest view is from Hosooka Observatory near Kushiro-Shitsugen Station, but trains are few and a car makes the rest of the park much easier.
- [Michi-no-Eki Biei Shirogane Birke](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-biei-shirogane-birke): Hokkaido, Michi no eki. A small station in the birch woods of Shirogane, a couple of minutes' drive from the Blue Pond. Opened in 2018, it has a burger shop using Biei-grown wheat, an outdoor-gear corner and the area's tourist information.
- [Michi-no-Eki Boyo Nakayama](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-boyo-nakayama): Hokkaido, Michi no eki. The summit stop on Route 230 between Sapporo and Lake Toya or Niseko, named for its view of Mt. Yotei. Nearly everyone stops for age-imo, whole Danshaku potatoes fried in a lightly sweet batter.
- [Moerenuma Park](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/moerenuma-park): Hokkaido, Park. A 188.8-hectare park in northeast Sapporo built to Isamu Noguchi's master plan on top of a former landfill. Entry and parking are free, the Sea Fountain runs from late April to around mid-October, and the main sights are a 15-minute walk or more from the bus stops.
- [Mount Tarumae](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mount-tarumae): Hokkaido, Mountain. An active volcano south of Lake Shikotsu whose 1909 lava dome sits in the summit crater like a giant pudding. From the 7th-station car park it is about 50 minutes up to Higashiyama (1,022 m) on the crater rim, one of the easiest volcano walks in Hokkaido, though the crater floor itself is closed.
- [Okushiri Island](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/okushiri-island): Hokkaido, Island. An island 84 km around, 61 km off Esashi in the Sea of Japan, known for sea urchin, clear water and the ring-shaped Nabezuru-iwa rock. The 1993 Hokkaido Nansei-oki earthquake and tsunami took 198 lives here; a memorial and a tsunami museum stand in Aonae.
