- [Takegawara Onsen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/takegawara-onsen): Oita, Onsen. A city-run bathhouse a 10-minute walk from Beppu Station, in a 1938 wooden building with a curved karahafu gable over the door. The ordinary bath is 300 yen. For 1,500 yen you put on a yukata, lie down on the sand-bath floor and staff shovel hot sand over you for about 15 minutes.
- [Kyushu Natural Animal Park African Safari](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kyushu-natural-animal-park-african-safari): Oita, Zoo. A large drive-through safari park with about 70 species and 1,400 animals along a 6 km road. Drive your own car, or take the Jungle Bus and feed lions and bears through the bars.
- [Kuju Mountains](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kuju-mountains): Oita, Mountain. A cluster of volcanic peaks on the Oita highlands whose top, Nakadake at 1,791 meters, is the highest point on mainland Kyushu. Most hikers start at Makinoto Pass (1,330 m) or Chojabaru (1,040 m), and in May and June the Miyama-kirishima azaleas turn the upper slopes pink and the car parks fill.
- [Kijima Kogen Park](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kijima-kogen-park): Oita, Amusement park. A highland amusement park on the road from Beppu to Yufuin, best known for Jupiter, the wooden coaster that opened in 1992 as Japan's first. Cooler than the coast in summer, with an ice rink in winter.
- [Michi-no-Eki Kamae](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-kamae): Oita, Michi no eki. A fishing-port station on Route 388 in Kamae, at the southern tip of Oita next to the Miyazaki border. Since 2019 it has called itself Buri Laboratory and leans hard on farmed yellowtail, with a seafood restaurant and a market full of dried fish.
- [Mount Yufu](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mount-yufu): Oita, Mountain. A 1,583-meter volcano with two summits that fills the skyline behind Yufuin, known locally as Bungo Fuji. Yufu City's trail map gives about 2.5 hours from the main trailhead to the top, with chains on the west peak and a crater-rim loop meant only for experienced hikers.
- [Kokonoe Yume Suspension Bridge](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kokonoe-yume-suspension-bridge): Oita, Landmark. A pedestrian-only suspension bridge 173 meters above the Naruko River gorge and 390 meters long, opened in 2006. It is still the tallest pedestrian suspension bridge in Japan, and from the middle you look straight up the valley at the Shindo-no-taki falls. The deck is 1.5 meters wide and made of open metal grating, so you can see down through it.
- [Michi-no-Eki Taio Kinzan](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-taio-kinzan): Oita, Michi no eki. A roadside station deep in the Nakatsue mountains, next to the Taio gold mine museum. Walk the old tunnels, try panning for gold, then eat at the restaurant before the long drive out.
- [Beppu Rakutenchi](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/beppu-rakutenchi): Oita, Amusement park. A small, old-fashioned amusement park on the slope above Beppu, opened in 1929. You ride a steep cable car up, bet on the daily duck race, and the hot spring bath is included in admission.
