A large Hachiman shrine in Higashi Ward that calls itself one of Japan's three great Hachiman shrines, with a 16th-century gate and a plaque linked to the Mongol invasions. Free to enter and three minutes from the subway. In mid-September the Hojoya festival fills the approach with stalls and draws about a million visitors over seven days.
- [Michi-no-Eki Ukiha](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-ukiha): Fukuoka, Michi no eki. A hillside market on Route 210 in Ukiha, one of Fukuoka's main fruit-growing areas. Come for whatever is in season and the deck looking north across the Chikugo Plain.
- [Oshima (Munakata)](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/oshima-munakata): Fukuoka, Island. An island of about 700 people, 15 to 25 minutes by ferry from Konominato in Munakata, with two of the component parts of the Okinoshima World Heritage Site: Nakatsu-miya, the middle of Munakata Taisha's three shrines, five minutes' walk from the port, and the Okitsu-miya Yohaisho on the north shore, built to worship Okinoshima from afar. Okinoshima itself is closed to the public, and on a clear day this is as close as you can get to seeing it.
- [Shikanoshima](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/shikanoshima): Fukuoka, Island. A small island at the tip of the Uminonakamichi sandbar, joined to the mainland by a bridge since 1930. The gold seal now in the Fukuoka City Museum was found here in 1784, and an 11 km coastal road makes a good bike loop. The city ferry from Hakata Futo takes about 30 minutes.

A farm market on Route 386 at the entrance to Harazuru Onsen, five minutes from Haki IC. Asakura is fruit country, and in late autumn the Fuyu persimmons piled up inside are the reason to stop.
- [Fukuoka Castle Ruins](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/fukuoka-castle-ruins): Fukuoka, Castle. Above Maizuru Park, Fukuoka Castle’s layered stone walls lead to an open platform overlooking the city. This former Kuroda stronghold offers a spacious urban ruins walk, with cherry trees and neighboring Ohori Park extending the visit beyond the defenses.
- [Michi-no-Eki Munakata](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-munakata): Fukuoka, Michi no eki. Fish from Kanezaki, Oshima and the other nearby ports arrives here every day, and the seafood section takes up about a third of the market floor. It has long been one of the best-selling roadside stations in Kyushu, so come in the morning.
