A narrow hot spring valley along the Shima River in northwest Gunma with 42 sources, named in 1954 as one of Japan's first three national health spa resorts. Sekizenkan's 1691 main building is often linked with Spirited Away, and the lake upstream, Okushima-ko, turns a bright "Shima blue" in spring.
- [Michi-no-Eki Kawaba Denen Plaza](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-kawaba-denen-plaza): Gunma, Michi no eki. Kawaba village’s roadside station, about 10 minutes from Numata IC, topped Jalan's national michi-no-eki rankings in 2025 and 2026. Come for the farmers market, the in-house yogurt, sausages and beer, and plan on staying longer than a toilet stop.
