- [Hakodate](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hakodate): Hokkaido, City. Port city famous for its night view from Mount Hakodate, bustling morning market, and historic Western-style buildings in the Motomachi district.
- [Rishiri Island](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/rishiri-island): Hokkaido, Island. A round volcanic island off Hokkaido's northwest coast that is almost all mountain: Mt Rishiri rises straight out of the sea to 1,721 m. You arrive on a 1 hour 40 minute ferry from Wakkanai or a small plane from Sapporo, and weather cancels both. The climb from Oshidomari takes 10 to 11 hours there and back, with no toilets on the mountain.
- [Rusutsu Resort](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/rusutsu-resort): Hokkaido, Amusement park. A large year-round mountain resort near Lake Toya with one of Hokkaido's biggest amusement parks in summer, including wooden and looping coasters, and one of Japan's premier powder ski areas in winter.
- [Mount Tokachi](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mount-tokachi): Hokkaido, Mountain. A 2,077 m active volcano at the south end of the Tokachi range, climbed from the Bogakudai car park at about 930 m, with a free mixed-bathing rock pool at Fukiage Onsen on its slope. Whether you can climb at all depends on the Japan Meteorological Agency's eruption alert level, so check it before you go.
- [Asahidake](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/asahidake): Hokkaido, Mountain. At 2,291 m, Asahidake is the highest mountain in Hokkaido and an active volcano in Daisetsuzan National Park. The Asahidake Ropeway lifts you from Asahidake Onsen to Sugatami Station at about 1,600 m in 10 minutes, where a 1.7 km loop passes Sugatami Pond and steaming vents, and the summit trail begins.
- [Historical Village of Hokkaido](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/historical-village-of-hokkaido): Hokkaido, Museum. An open-air museum with 52 buildings from the Meiji to early Showa periods, moved or reconstructed from across Hokkaido on a 54.2-hectare site in Nopporo Forest Park. Adults pay 1,000 yen; a horse-drawn tram runs from mid-April to November and horse sleighs in winter.
- [Cape Kamui](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/cape-kamui): Hokkaido, Landmark. A narrow headland at the north-west tip of the Shakotan Peninsula where the 770 m Charenka path runs along a ridge to a lighthouse, with the 41 m Kamui Rock offshore and water the local name calls Shakotan blue. Allow about an hour from the car park and back, and expect the gate to close when the wind picks up.
- [Michi-no-Eki Shikabe Kanketsusen Koen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-shikabe-kanketsusen-koen): Hokkaido, Michi no eki. A roadside station on Route 278 in Shikabe, built beside a hot-spring geyser that goes off roughly every ten minutes. Pay a small fee to watch it from a footbath, then buy scallops or shrimp in the shop and steam them over the spring yourself.
- [Mount Yotei](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mount-yotei): Hokkaido, Mountain. A 1,898 m volcano with a near-perfect cone, called Ezo Fuji, that rises alone above Niseko and Kutchan. Four trails reach the crater rim in a little over four hours each way, and the round trip can take 10 hours with no water anywhere on the mountain.
- [Hokkaido Shrine](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hokkaido-shrine): Hokkaido, Shrine. Sapporo's main shrine, in the forest of Maruyama Park, founded in 1869 as the guardian of Hokkaido's settlement. Entry is free, but the gates close at 16:00 from November to February, and the first days of January bring long queues.
- [Lake Shikotsu](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/lake-shikotsu): Hokkaido, Attraction. A caldera lake about 360 m deep, the second deepest in Japan, and clear enough that the shallows glow blue. It almost never freezes over, and in winter its sprayed water becomes the ice sculptures of the Ice Festival. Buses from New Chitose Airport take about 55 minutes.
- [Michi-no-Eki Niseko View Plaza](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-niseko-view-plaza): Hokkaido, Michi no eki. Where Route 5 meets the Iwanai–Toya road in Niseko, local farmers sell their own vegetables beside a tourist office with Mount Yotei filling the view. A good first stop for the Niseko area and a regular high scorer in national roadside-station rankings.
- [Odori Park](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/odori-park): Hokkaido, Park. A park about 1.5 km long and 7.8 ha in area that runs west from the Sapporo TV Tower through 12 city blocks, laid out in 1871 as a firebreak. It is free, open at all hours, and the main stage for Sapporo's yearly festivals, the Snow Festival above all.
- [Shiretoko Five Lakes](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/shiretoko-five-lakes): Hokkaido, Park. Five small lakes in old forest about 14 km past Utoro, inside the Shiretoko World Natural Heritage area. There are two ways to see them. An 800 m elevated boardwalk, fenced against bears, runs to the first lake and is free all season. The ground trail past all five has rules: from 10 May to 31 July you can only walk it on a registered guide's tour, and the rest of the season you sit a ten-minute lecture and pay 450 yen. The lakes are open from about mid-April to early or mid-November, while the road is open.
- [Upopoy National Ainu Museum and Park](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/upopoy-national-ainu-museum-and-park): Hokkaido, Museum. The national centre for Ainu culture, opened in 2020 on the shore of Lake Poroto in Shiraoi: the National Ainu Museum, a reconstructed kotan of thatched chise houses, a craft workshop and a hall for traditional dance. Entry is 1,200 yen, and JR Shiraoi Station is a 10-minute walk away.
