- [Heisenji Hakusan Shrine](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/heisenji-hakusan-shrine): Fukui, Shrine. A serene moss-covered shrine on the ruins of one of medieval Japan's largest temple cities, famous for its emerald moss carpet and ancient cedar-lined stone approach.
- [Konze Tenma no Mori](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/konze-tenma-no-mori): Shiga, Park. A green hilltop forest park on the slopes of Konze-yama in Ritto, next to the Michi-no-Eki Konze no Sato roadside station, laid out on the site of a 1975 national tree-planting ceremony and looking out over Lake Biwa, Omi-Fuji and the Konze hiking trails.
- [Taro Kanko Hotel Tsunami Ruins](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/taro-kanko-hotel-tsunami-ruins): Iwate, Historic site. A six-story hotel on the Taro coast of Miyako, gutted to the fourth floor by the 2011 tsunami and preserved as a disaster-heritage ruin. Free to view from outside; go inside on the guided 'Learn Disaster Prevention' tour (booking required).
- [Tsunami Memorial Museum and Michi-no-Eki Takata Matsubara](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/tsunami-memorial-museum-and-michi-no-eki-takata-matsubara): Iwate, Museum. A combined roadside station and free memorial museum in the Takata Matsubara Tsunami Reconstruction Memorial Park, telling the story of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, with a local-products shop, a restaurant, and a short walk to the Miracle Lone Pine.
- [Miracle Lone Pine](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/miracle-lone-pine): Iwate, Landmark. The single pine that survived the 2011 tsunami among Takata Matsubara's roughly 70,000 trees, preserved as a monument to the disaster and the region's recovery, a short walk from the tsunami memorial museum.
- [Michi-no-Eki Konze no Sato Ritto](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-konze-no-sato-ritto): Shiga, Michi no eki. A roadside station in the Konze hills of Ritto, with a farm shop of local Shiga produce and specialties, a restaurant known for wild-boar shishi-don, fig soft-serve ice cream, and access to the Konze Alps hiking trails.
- [Fukui Kodomo Kazokukan](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/fukui-kodomo-kazokukan): Fukui, Attraction. A large indoor play-and-learning center for children at the Umin-pia Ohi seaside complex on the Wakasa coast in Fukui, with one of Japan's biggest indoor climbing walls and ball pools, a dinosaur zone, and craft and cooking workshops.
- [Kyoto Railway Museum](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kyoto-railway-museum): Kyoto, Museum. JR West's railway museum in Umekoji Park, with more than 50 real trains from steam locomotives to the first Shinkansen, a working 1914 roundhouse and a short steam-train ride.
- [Kyoto Station](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kyoto-station): Kyoto, Landmark. Hiroshi Hara's 1997 station building: a 171-step staircase lit with LEDs after dark, a corridor 45 m up, ten ramen shops on the 10th floor. The rooftop garden is closed from 27 November 2026 until around winter 2031.
- [Anraku-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/anraku-ji): Kyoto, Temple. A small Pure Land temple behind a thatched gate, a few minutes off the Philosopher's Path, founded in memory of the monks Juren and Anraku, executed in 1207. It opens only on announced days in spring and autumn and on 25 July for its pumpkin memorial; entry is 500 yen.
- [Yoshiminedera Temple](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/yoshiminedera-temple): Kyoto, Temple. Yoshiminedera spreads across Kyoto’s western hills, with terraced temple paths, wide city views and the remarkable spreading Yuryu pine. Seasonal flowers reward the climb, but reaching this mountain temple now requires more planning than older bus guides suggest.
- [Miyama no Sato](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/miyama-no-sato): Osaka, Market. A farm produce market in Ibaraki City, Osaka, where we tried ¥300 Ryuou miso gelato with a caramel-like first taste and a pleasant miso finish.
- [Takao (Kyoto)](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/takao-kyoto): Kyoto, Attraction. A river valley in the hills northwest of Kyoto where three temples, Jingo-ji, Saimyo-ji and Kozan-ji, stand a short walk apart along the Kiyotaki River. The maples turn in November, inns build dining platforms over the water, and a riverside trail runs down to Kiyotaki.
- [Jinrui Mina Menrui Tsukemen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/jinrui-mina-menrui-tsukemen): Osaka, Restaurant. The original shop stopped serving tsukemen, so this is where to get it. The dipping broth arrives in a pot over a flame, so it is still hot at the last mouthful. Noodles are 200g as standard, with 300g and 400g at the same price, though an unfinished 400g is charged 300 yen.
- [Menya Sanda](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/menya-sanda): Kyoto, Restaurant. A ten-seat tsukemen shop in Ukyo-ku, open since 2017, serving thick house-made noodles with a dense chicken dipping soup. It is a 15-minute walk from Hankyu Saiin Station, and there is often a short queue.
