- [Mitarai Valley](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mitarai-valley): Nara, Trail. A gorge in Tenkawa village with waterfalls, clear green pools and giant boulders, followed by a riverside walking trail popular for autumn foliage.
- [Kasugayama Primeval Forest](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kasugayama-primeval-forest): Nara, Trail. The forest on Mount Kasuga behind Kasuga Taisha, kept as the shrine's sacred ground since hunting and logging were banned in 841. It is a Special Natural Monument and part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara World Heritage site. You cannot go into the forest itself; you walk the 9.4 km path around it, best on the Takisaka stone road to the Kasugayama cave Buddhas, carved in the 1150s. Free, but wet and lonely in places.
- [Yamanobe-no-michi](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/yamanobe-no-michi): Nara, Trail. A walking route along the western foot of the hills east of the Nara basin, often called Japan's oldest road and named in the Kojiki. The usual stretch runs about 16 km from Tenri Station past Isonokami Shrine, Chogaku-ji and the big imperial tombs to Omiwa Shrine and Sakurai Station, with only about 75 m of height difference. Allow most of a day. JR stations below the route let you stop early.
