- [Hashima Island (Gunkanjima)](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hashima-island-gunkanjima): Nagasaki, Historic site. A UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution, Hashima Island (Gunkanjima or Battleship Island) is an abandoned coal mining island off the coast of Nagasaki. Once the most densely populated place on earth, the island's crumbling concrete apartment blocks and industrial ruins create a haunting post-apocalyptic landscape accessible only by boat tour.
- [Dejima](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/dejima): Nagasaki, Historic site. A restored fan-shaped island in central Nagasaki that served as the Netherlands' trading post during Japan's period of national seclusion.
- [Nagasaki Peace Park](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/nagasaki-peace-park): Nagasaki, Historic site. A solemn peace memorial featuring the Peace Statue and the Atomic Bomb Museum documenting Nagasaki's history.
- [Glover Garden](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/glover-garden): Nagasaki, Historic site. A hillside open-air museum featuring Western-style residences from Japan's Meiji-era foreign settlement in Nagasaki.
- [Kashiragashima Church](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kashiragashima-church): Nagasaki, Historic site. A sandstone church on Kashiragashima, off Nakadori island in the Goto chain, built from 1910 to 1919 by Tetsukawa Yosuke with stone the congregation cut and carried themselves. Part of the UNESCO Hidden Christian Sites, and awkward to reach without a car.
- [Hara Castle Ruins](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hara-castle-ruins): Nagasaki, Historic site. Grassy ruins on a headland above the Ariake Sea, where some 27,000 to 37,000 rebels under Amakusa Shiro held out for months in 1637 to 1638 and almost all were killed. A UNESCO Hidden Christian Sites component since 2018.
- [Urakami Cathedral](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/urakami-cathedral): Nagasaki, Historic site. Nagasaki's Catholic cathedral, rebuilt in 1959 after the atomic bomb brought down the old brick church about 500 meters from the hypocenter. A fallen bell-tower dome still lies in the stream below.
- [Hirado St. Francis Xavier Memorial Church](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hirado-st-francis-xavier-memorial-church): Nagasaki, Historic site. A pale green Gothic church built in 1931 on a hill above Hirado's old town, known as the Xavier Memorial Church after Francis Xavier, who came to Hirado in 1550. From the stone lane below, its spire rises behind the roofs of Buddhist temples.
- [Sotome](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/sotome): Nagasaki, Historic site. The coast north of Nagasaki where Hidden Christians worshipped in secret, with Fr. de Rotz's Shitsu Church (a UNESCO component), the Endo Shusaku Literary Museum and sunsets over the Sumo-nada sea.
- [Egami Church](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/egami-church): Nagasaki, Historic site. A small white wooden church with pale blue window frames, built in 1918 by Tetsukawa Yosuke for descendants of Hidden Christians on Naru Island in the Goto chain. Raised on a high floor against the damp of a spring-fed valley by the sea. Part of the UNESCO Hidden Christian Sites. Advance notice is required, the grounds close on Mondays and the third Sunday of each month, and you need a boat and then a car or taxi to get there.
- [Kasuga Village and Mount Yasumandake](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kasuga-village-and-mount-yasumandake): Nagasaki, Historic site. A farming village of terraced rice fields on the west coast of Hirado Island, where Hidden Christians kept their faith by praying to Mount Yasumandake and to an offshore islet of martyrs, and never rejoined the Catholic Church. Part of the UNESCO Hidden Christian Sites. There is no church: come for the terraces, the small information house run by villagers and the climb to the shrine on Yasumandake. A car makes it much easier.
